マンボウは夜に発光する・・・？
2011年も残すところあとわずか。そんな折に、古文献の中から気になる記述を見付けたのでご紹介します。
★they are known to exhibit, during the night, a high degree of phosphoric splendor.――Swainson(1838)
★The sunfish is described as glowing phosphorescent at night in water. This, however, we can not verify first hand, ――Bigelow and Welsh(1925)
この2つの文献にはマンボウは夜に水中で燐光（phosphorescent）すると書かれています。Bigelow and Welsh(1925)も確認できなかったと記述しているように、何かの見間違いかではないかと思うのですが、もし本当だったらとても面白いですね！
＜追記＞
もしかしたらこのソースの原点かもしれない古い文献にもう少し詳しい記述がありました。しかし、はやり意味がわからないです。餌を摂る記述とともにあることから推測するに、集魚灯のように夜間に光って餌を食べると考えたのでしょうか？？？
